SUMMARY
Based on true events, Brothers in Hope is a story of courage and a testament to the unyielding power of the human spirit.
Eight-year-old Garang is tending cattle far from his family's home in southern Sudan when war comes to his village. Frightened but unharmed, he returns to find everything has been destroyed.
He meets other boys who have been impacted by war, and before long, they unite walk hundreds of miles to seek safety. Though they face numerous hardships and dangers along the way, mutual support helps keep hope alive in their hearts.
REVIEWS
“Christie’s (The Palm of My Heart) acrylics, in bold strokes and brilliant colors, with their childlike renderings of figures and scenes, correlate nicely to the young narrator’s unflagging determination, and help to balance the darkness of the events.” —Publishers Weekly
“At last, he and some of the other boys are offered the opportunity to go to the US. Williams allows Garang to narrate his story of unimaginable suffering and pain and the atrocities of war. Christie’s strongly hued acrylic paintings provide graphic accompaniment in his affecting style.” —Kirkus Reviews
